While working in Boston in my youth, there was a wonderful Irish pub named The Black Rose just around the corner from my office. Outside the pub, perched above the signage, was a figurehead such as you would see on the bow of a sailing ship. As an aspiring woodcarver, I was captivated by its beautiful image- a large black rose surrounded by intricate Celtic knots and large scrolls top and bottom. So it was a pleasant surprise this past winter when I was commissioned by the pub's owner to replicate the piece, as Mother Nature had taken its toll on the original. It is an honor, joy and challenge to re-create this most unusual carving. Following is a gallery of “in progress” images.
